Riverine Natura 2000 habitat reserve at the Osława, San confluence in the Polish Carpathian foothills.

Sanisko w Bykowcach

Sanisko w Bykowcach is a small but ecologically rich Natura 2000 site in southeastern Poland, recognized under the European Union Habitats Directive as a site of Community importance. The reserve lies near the village of Bykowce, immediately adjacent to the point where the Osława River flows into the San River, in the Podkarpackie region of the Carpathian foothills. Although compact in scale, the area demonstrates a striking diversity of wetland and floodplain habitats compressed into a single transition zone between two river valleys. Roughly four fifths of the site sits within the Wschodniobeskidzki Obszar Chronionego Krajobrazu, a broader East-Beskidian Protected Landscape Area, giving the reserve additional regional protection context. The combination of old river channels, freshwater meadows, tall herb riverbank vegetation, oak-hornbeam woodland, and riparian floodplain forest creates a habitat mosaic that supports beavers, otters, amphibians, and a rich community of birds. The reserve is significant because it preserves a working example of lowland riverine and floodplain ecology in a region otherwise known more for forested hills and traditional agriculture. Its location at a river confluence gives it particular value as a refuge for species that depend on calm, sediment-rich waters and seasonally flooded shoreline habitats.
