Schönleitenmoos Nature Reserve

Schönleitenmoos im Wierlinger Forst is a small nature reserve in the Oberallgäu district of Bavarian Swabia, in southern Germany. It lies roughly ten kilometers southwest of Kempten, within the forested Wierlinger Forst, and protects a 23-hectare raised bog sitting on the watershed between the Rhine and the Danube at about 932 meters above sea level. The bog developed after the last ice age from a glacial lake, or Eisrandsee, that formed when Alpine glaciers began to retreat. As the lake silted up it first turned into a flat bog (Flachmoor) and then into an ombrotrophic raised bog (Hochmoor). The site is notable for its well-developed transition from spruce forest at the bog margin through moor pines to open bog pools in the center, and especially for a rare extra-Alpine population of the rust-leaved alpine rose (Rhododendron ferrugineum), which was a key reason for its protection. As one of several protected peatlands in the Wierlinger Forst and the wider Oberallgäu, Schönleitenmoos provides a compact but ecologically rich example of post-glacial raised bog development in the northern Alpine foothills.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
