Siargao Islands Protected Landscape and Seascape

Siargao Islands Protected Landscape and Seascape, commonly abbreviated SIPLAS, is the largest marine protected area in the Philippines. It lies off the northeastern coast of Mindanao in the province of Surigao del Norte and encompasses a small archipelago made up of Siargao Island, Bucas Grande, Middle Bucas, East Bucas, Hinatuan, La Janosa, Anahawan, Dako, and surrounding islets. The protected area combines terrestrial ecosystems, including limestone and basalt hills draped in tropical vegetation, with extensive marine territory of coral banks, seagrass beds, mangroves, and offshore reefs. Its mix of lowland forests, coastal wetlands, and rich sea life has shaped its identity as a flagship Philippine reserve spanning both landscape and seascape. Beyond its ecological importance, SIPLAS has gained international recognition through the surfing waves on the eastern side of Siargao Island. The reef break known as Cloud 9 has turned the reserve into a globally known surfing destination while also drawing attention to the conservation challenges that come with balancing tourism, coastal communities, and marine biodiversity.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
