Slaná louka u Újezdce

Slaná louka u Újezdce is a small natural monument in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, located on the eastern edge of the village of Újezdec in the Mělník District. Established in 2013, the protected area covers roughly 1.38 hectares of lowland terrain at about 168 metres above sea level. Its purpose is to safeguard a Natura 2000 site of European importance composed of salt-influenced meadows, semi-natural dry grasslands, and patches of scrub on calcareous substrate. The site is ecologically significant because such saline and dry grassland habitats have become rare in the Czech agricultural landscape, where centuries of intensified land use have eliminated or fragmented the conditions that originally supported them. By protecting a representative fragment near Újezdec, the monument preserves an unusual combination of halophytic vegetation, steppe-like dry grassland, and shrubby edge habitats within a very compact area. Although the reserve is tiny in scale, it reflects a broader conservation effort within the Czech Natura 2000 network to maintain the small, specialised habitat islands that contribute disproportionately to the country's biodiversity. Its accessibility from the surrounding village landscape also makes it a quiet but instructive example of lowland grassland conservation in central Bohemia.
