Slanisko u Škrle

Slanisko u Škrle is a small natural monument located on the western edge of the village of Škrle, near Bílence in the Chomutov district of the Ústecký Region in the Czech Republic. The site protects a distinctive saline, or halophytic, habitat that is unusual inland, supporting a species-rich mix of salt-tolerant and xerothermic plants on a gentle, south-facing slope above the Chomutovka river valley. The protected area covers only a few hectares, yet its ecological value is far higher than its size might suggest. It safeguards populations of critically endangered plant species, including the sea plantain, alongside a community of dry-grassland and flood-meadow species that depend on the naturally mineralised soils. The reserve is also formally part of a larger European site of importance, reflecting its recognised value for continent-wide habitat conservation. Because of its compact scale, its scientific interest, and the rarity of inland saline habitats in Central Europe, Slanisko u Škrle is an important reference site for Czech botanical and conservation work, particularly within the broader Chomutov subregion.
