Sokolí hnízdo a bažantnice

Sokolí hnízdo a bažantnice is a small protected natural monument in the České Budějovice District of South Bohemia, in the Czech Republic. It lies on the left bank of the Stropnice River, northwest of the town of Nové Hrady, within the broader landscape of the Třeboň Basin, a low-lying region historically shaped by fishpond systems, mixed forests, and freshwater wetlands. The site was designated in 2014 to protect a corresponding European site of community importance, primarily because of its stands of broadleaf trees and the rare habitats they support. The protected area covers roughly 47 hectares across the cadastral territories of Nové Hrady, Štiptoň, and Údolí u Nových Hradů, and is also associated with the name "bažantnice," a traditional Czech term for a pheasant preserve or managed woodland historically used to support pheasant populations. Ecologically, the area is valued for its mature deciduous forest habitats and for the specialized invertebrate fauna they sustain, including the hermit beetle, a species closely tied to old broadleaf trees. The site is small in scale but ecologically focused, offering a representative example of the deciduous woodland communities that survive within the altered, fishpond-dominated landscape of the Třeboň Basin.
