Tañon Strait Protected Seascape

The Tañon Strait Protected Seascape is a vast marine protected area covering the body of water that separates the islands of Negros and Cebu in the central Visayas region of the Philippines. Stretching roughly 160 kilometres between the Visayan Sea in the north and the Bohol Sea in the south, the strait ranges from about 5 to 27 kilometres wide and reaches depths of several hundred metres. Declared a Protected Seascape in 1998, it is the largest marine protected area in the country and a nationally significant refuge for cetaceans and other marine wildlife. The protected seascape is ecologically important because the strait serves as a breeding, feeding, and resting ground for multiple species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises, including Irrawaddy dolphins. Its coastal fringe is shared by cities such as San Carlos, Bais, and Toledo, which host deepwater port facilities, and by smaller communities whose livelihoods are linked to fishing and increasingly to whale and dolphin watching tours operating from Bais. Beyond its ecological role, the Tañon Strait Protected Seascape has been central to high-profile national debates over oil exploration, cetacean protection, and the rights of marine species within Philippine law. It also carries cultural meaning in Visayan folklore, where the waters are associated with mythological narratives about divine messengers and sacred marine creatures.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
