In calmer summer weather the chalk colours read brighter against the sea and the headland's downland flowers are at their most visible.
Outside the high season, autumn and winter visits offer a wilder, emptier atmosphere, with generally fewer boats and quieter bus services, though the exposed clifftop walk to the batteries can be bracing and is officially closed to visitors in winds above force 8 on the Beaufort scale. The site is, by its nature, a place of strong weather, and the cliffs and the lighthouse take on a different kind of drama in stormy conditions; during Storm Eunice in February 2022 the location provisionally recorded the highest wind gust ever measured in England.
