V hlubokém

V hlubokém is a protected natural monument in the Ústecký Region of the Czech Republic, located in a forested slope above the Débeřský stream between the market town of Peruc and the village of Stradonice in the Louny district. The site was established as early as 1947 to safeguard a stand of rare thermophilic vegetation anchored by opuka, a soft calcareous rock that creates unusually alkaline conditions in an otherwise Central Bohemian landscape. The protected area covers only about twenty hectares of hillside, yet it is recognized across the country as one of the most important localities for sesleria grasslands, a vegetation type far more typical of warmer, drier regions further south. On the exposed rocky outcrops and screes, light-loving oak woodland gives way to open calcicole grasslands, low shrubs such as cotoneaster, and a rich assemblage of uncommon herbs that together form a striking botanical island in the middle of an otherwise ordinary woodland. Beyond its botanical interest, V hlubokém is valued as part of the broader Débeř valley ecosystem, which shelters amphibians, insects, and a diverse community of birds. The site illustrates how a small, sharply delimited area can carry disproportionate ecological and conservation significance within the Czech network of protected natural monuments.
