Valles del Jubera, Leza, Cidacos y Alhama Biosphere Reserve

Valles del Jubera, Leza, Cidacos y Alhama is a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve that covers roughly one quarter of the autonomous community of La Rioja in northern Spain. The reserve is shaped by four parallel river valleys, those of the Jubera, Leza, Cidacos, and Alhama, which have carved deep limestone gorges and ravines into a mid-mountain landscape between roughly 450 and 1,758 meters in elevation. The protected area combines natural and cultural values that are tightly linked to the land. Mediterranean forests of oak, holm oak, and Scots pine alternate with juniper and rockrose shrublands, open pastures, and dry-farming terraces, while thermal springs emerge from the limestone bedrock and paleontological sites preserve thousands of dinosaur footprints. Across the valleys lie Celtiberian settlements and other traces of long human presence, showing a landscape that has been shaped by traditional land use for centuries. Designated as a biosphere reserve in 2003, the territory extends over 119,669 hectares and is divided into a strictly protected core zone, a buffer zone, and a wider transition zone that includes inhabited villages. The reserve encompasses dozens of small municipalities whose combined population of around 10,000 continues to manage the land through agriculture, livestock, and forestry traditions that helped define its character.
