Veselský háj

Veselský háj is a protected natural monument in the Bohemian region of the Czech Republic, situated near the village of Sběř in the Jičín district of the Královéhradecký region. The site preserves an authentic oak-hornbeam woodland, one of the characteristic lowland forest types of central Bohemia, together with an adjoining fishpond that has long been recognized as an important ornithological locality. Originally declared a natural monument in 1998, the protected area was re-designated in 2014 with a substantially expanded footprint of around 444 hectares, focusing on the conservation of mature forest ecosystems. The woodland is notable for its thermophilic, warmth-loving understory flora as well as for populations of rare plant species that depend on undisturbed, structurally diverse broadleaf forest. Beyond its botanical value, Veselský háj forms part of a broader mosaic of lowland forests and fishponds typical of the eastern Bohemian countryside, contributing to regional habitat connectivity and serving as a refuge for threatened species that have become scarce across much of the surrounding agricultural landscape.
