Recorded Earthquake History and Seismic Records Near the Veveřský potok Natural Monument

This collection provides a searchable catalogue of historical earthquake events that occurred in the proximity of Veveřský potok, situated between the Novohradské podhůří foothills and the Novohradské hory mountains. Users can view mapped seismic data points, including event dates, magnitude readings, and epicentre distances calculated relative to the protected stream valley boundaries. The records serve as a reference for regional seismic history rather than a predictive hazard assessment.

Veveřský potok

Veveřský potok is a small Czech natural monument in the South Bohemian Region, situated at the boundary between the Novohradské podhůří foothills and the Novohradské hory mountains, roughly one kilometer south of the town of Nové Hrady. It protects approximately five kilometers of an upper mountain stream valley and is embedded within the broader Novohradské hory Natural Park, near the Czech-Austrian border. The protected area was established specifically to conserve a European-significant locality of rare and threatened animal species. Its defining conservation value is the presence of the critically endangered European brook lamprey alongside the natural stream habitat it depends on. Although compact in size, the site reflects the broader ecological quality of the upper Novohradský stream systems that drain toward the Malše river basin. Beyond its narrow biodiversity focus, Veveřský potok is noteworthy because it integrates cultural and historical layers, including a long-used drinking-water spring for the town of Nové Hrady documented since 1639, and sits within a landscape shaped by twentieth-century border-zone depopulation. The combination of freshwater ecology, foothills-to-mountain transition, and historical land use gives the site a layered character typical of small but purposeful Czech natural monuments.
