Vrbka Natural Monument

Vrbka is a small protected natural monument in the northern part of the Czech Republic, located about half a kilometre east of the village of Vrbka near Budyně nad Ohří in the Litoměřice district of Ústí nad Labem Region. Declared on 1 November 2013 by the Regional Authority of the Ústecký Region, it covers roughly 15.5 hectares of low-lying countryside between about 210 and 255 metres above sea level. The site was established to safeguard a combination of semi-natural dry calcareous grasslands, scrub margins on limestone substrate, and oak-hornbeam woodland, all of which support a notably rich community of rare plants, insects, and fungi. The defining character of Vrbka lies in its concentration of species-rich dry grassland and open woodland habitats that have become increasingly rare across the Bohemian lowlands. Its combination of warm, lime-rich slopes, scrub-edge transitions, and small patches of oak-hornbeam forest provides habitat for a varied flora and fauna that is unusual for such a compact protected area. The monument is categorised at the international level as an IUCN Category IV site, recognising it primarily as a habitat for a particular species rather than a large-scale ecosystem reserve. Although very small in size, Vrbka carries considerable local conservation significance because it preserves a representative sample of plant communities that have largely disappeared from the intensively farmed agricultural landscape of central Bohemia. Its location close to the well-known village of Budyně nad Ohří places it within a region that already has a strong tradition of small-scale habitat protection, forming part of the wider network of natural monuments in the Litoměřice district.
