On 16 October 2010, the Westliches Borchelsmoor was officially designated as a nature reserve under the German "Naturschutzgebiet" tool, with the official identifier NSG LÜ 289. Since designation, management has moved toward active restoration of the bog hydrology. Because the bog terrain remains wet and soft even in summer, even in warmer months any visit should remain on established paths to avoid damaging recovering peatland surfaces.
