Amanda Bay

Amanda Bay, also known as Hovde Cove, is a small embayment on the Ingrid Christensen Coast of Princess Elizabeth Land, in East Antarctica. It lies at the southern margin of the much larger Prydz Bay, between the Vestfold Hills to the north-east and the Larsemann Hills to the south-west, and forms part of one of the most remote and ice-dominated coastlines on the continent. The bay is best known for its breeding colony of around several thousand pairs of emperor penguins, which raise their chicks on the stable sea ice at the south-west corner of the bay. This makes Amanda Bay one of the most important emperor penguin breeding sites in the region and the reason the area is formally protected under the Antarctic Treaty System. Beyond its wildlife significance, Amanda Bay is a striking Antarctic landscape in its own right, flanked by the Flatnes Ice Tongue and Cowell Island on one side and by the ice cliffs of the Hovde Glacier and Hovde Island on the other. It is largely filled with fast ice even in summer, giving it the character of a frozen, white-walled inlet typical of the East Antarctic coast.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
