Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve

Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve is a protected natural area in western Nicaragua, straddling the departments of Masaya and Granada. It centers on Laguna de Apoyo, a deep, roughly circular lake occupying the caldera of an extinct volcano, and surrounds the lake with a tropical dry forest ecosystem. The volcanic origin of the basin, combined with its protected status, gives the reserve a distinctive combination of geological, hydrological, and ecological value. The lake is endorheic, meaning it has no surface outlet, and its water balance is shaped largely by underground inflows and outflows. The surrounding dry forest hosts hundreds of plant species, a rich vertebrate and invertebrate fauna, and a notably high bird count, including migratory species. A small flock of cichlid fish endemic to the lake makes Laguna de Apoyo an important site for freshwater biological study in Central America. Declared a nature reserve in 1991, the area is one of 78 protected areas of Nicaragua and is managed under a formal management plan that regulates construction, motorized watercraft, and other human activities. Beyond its ecological role, the reserve has become a regional draw for outdoor recreation, with beaches, hiking, diving, and birdwatching all taking place within the caldera landscape.
