Baiyer River Sanctuary

Baiyer River Sanctuary is a nature reserve in Papua New Guinea that follows the course of the Baiyer River through the forested ridges of Western Highlands Province. Established on 13 January 1968 by the then-Australian administration, the reserve was created to protect a tract of mid-elevation rainforest that had long been recognized for its birdlife, including several species of the spectacular birds-of-paradise for which New Guinea is internationally famous. Today the sanctuary extends to roughly 740 hectares of largely intact forest at elevations between about 800 and 1200 metres, in one of the wettest climatic zones of the country. The reserve functions less as a developed visitor destination and more as a living conservation site, where the soundscape of rainforest birds remains a defining feature and where regenerating forest cover surrounds the remnants of older infrastructure that has been lost to unrest over the years.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
