Banco de Galicia

Banco de Galicia is an underwater seamount, classified as a guyot, located in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean roughly 200 kilometers west of the Galician coast near Cape Finisterre in Spain. The submerged mountain rises from abyssal depths of around 5,000 meters to shallower summits of about 650 to 1,500 meters, forming a distinct bathymetric structure separated from the continental shelf by a channel roughly 2,500 meters deep. The seamount is built from basaltic lava of oceanic crust and is blanketed by sediments rich in foraminifer shells, which over geological time have produced a unique deep-sea substrate. Its cold-water coral communities, dominated by Lophelia pertusa, support sponges, gorgonians, starfish, deep-sea crabs, and around 86 documented fish species including sharks and rays, making the Banco de Galicia an ecologically significant outpost of biodiversity in the open Atlantic. Public awareness of the bank grew sharply after the Prestige oil tanker sinking, which prompted new research and ultimately led to the site's designation as a Special Area of Conservation and a Special Protection Area for Birds within the European Natura 2000 network.
