The largest national park in the Polish mountains, protecting the high-mountain landscape of the Western Bieszczady.

Bieszczady National Park

Bieszczady National Park lies in the southeastern corner of Poland, in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship within the Western Bieszczady range of the Eastern Carpathians. Established in 1973, it protects the highest Polish portion of these mountains, including the iconic open mountain grasslands known as połoniny and extensive tracts of natural beech, fir, spruce, and sycamore forest. The park is one of Poland's largest protected areas and is the biggest national park situated entirely in Polish mountains. Since the post-war depopulation of the borderland valleys, much of the park has become a near-natural landscape of forest, meadow, and abandoned settlement traces, creating a distinctive cultural-natural mosaic that the park actively manages through traditional mowing and grazing. Bieszczady National Park also forms part of the UNESCO-designated East Carpathians International Biosphere Reserve, and a portion of its old-growth beech forests has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Its combination of remote Carpathian scenery, recovering wilderness, and rich large-mammal fauna makes it one of the most distinctive protected landscapes in Central Europe.
