Bokak Atoll

Bokak Atoll, also known as Taongi Atoll, is the most northerly and most isolated atoll in the Marshall Islands, lying far out in the North Pacific Ocean. It sits in the Ratak Chain, hundreds of kilometers north of the national capital Majuro and far closer to distant Wake Island than to any neighboring Marshallese atoll. Because of that extreme isolation, the atoll has escaped the introduction of nonnative plants and animals, leaving its flora, birdlife, and reef environments in an unusually undisturbed state. The landscape is a crescent-shaped ring of low coral islets surrounding a shallow lagoon, with no permanent freshwater lens and therefore no true forest cover, only sparse drought-adapted scrub. Bokak is uninhabited today and is valued regionally as one of the cleanest and least altered ecosystems in the central Pacific.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
