Bosawás Biosphere Reserve

The Bosawás Biosphere Reserve is a vast block of tropical rainforest in northern Nicaragua, recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve since 1997. Together with its buffer zone, it covers roughly 20,000 square kilometers, making it the second largest tropical rainforest in the Western Hemisphere after the Amazon, and representing about fifteen percent of Nicaragua's total land area. The reserve overlaps the ancestral territories of two indigenous peoples, the Mayangna and the Miskito, and supports an exceptionally rich and still largely unexplored biodiversity. Its landscape is shaped by the Cordillera Isabella range, Mount Saslaya, the Coco River along the Honduran border, and the headwaters of several major rivers, including the Bocay and Waspuk. Beyond its ecological value, Bosawás is also a focal point of land tenure and conservation conflict, where indigenous land rights, settler migration, and forest protection intersect. The name itself condenses the identity of the place: it combines the Bocay River, Mount Saslaya, and the Waspuk River. The entire territory of Saslaya National Park lies within Bosawás, reinforcing its role as a landscape-scale conservation area rather than a single park boundary.
