Caddo National Grassland

Caddo National Grassland is a federally protected grassland in the southern Great Plains, located in Fannin County in northeastern Texas. It consists of two non-contiguous sections, the Bois d'Arc Creek Unit and the Ladonia Unit, together covering roughly 17,873 acres. The land was acquired by the federal government in the 1930s, primarily to restore soils that had been badly damaged by agricultural erosion, and it remains one of the smaller but ecologically meaningful national grasslands in the Texas landscape. The grassland sits within a transitional zone where southern prairie blends with oak savanna and cross timbers woodland, giving it a distinctive mix of open grassland, scattered hardwood stands, and bottomland habitat along small creek corridors. Two developed recreation areas are associated with the grassland, anchored by Lake Davy Crockett, a reservoir of around 388 acres. Caddo National Grassland is administered by the U.S. Forest Service as part of a coordinated Texas forest and grassland network, managed alongside the four national forests and one other national grassland located entirely within the state. While it is modest in size, it plays an important role in representing a recovering piece of the historic mixed-grass and oak landscape of the southern Great Plains.
