Cerro Pancasan Natural Reserve

Cerro Pancasan Natural Reserve is one of the many protected natural areas that make up Nicaragua's National System of Protected Areas (SINAP), administered by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (MARENA). It belongs to the country-wide network of 78 protected areas that together cover roughly 17 percent of Nicaragua's landmass, and it sits in the family of hill-and-mountain reserves (the so-called cerros) that protect smaller ranges of intact forest and watersheds outside of the larger biosphere and national park designations. The reserve is centered on Cerro Pancasan, a hill or small mountain in western Nicaragua. Like many of Nicaragua's "cerro" reserves, it functions as a landscape-scale conservation unit protecting tropical dry forest transitioning into the Pacific lowlands, maintaining watershed integrity, and sheltering resident and migratory bird species that depend on continuous forest cover in an otherwise heavily altered agricultural matrix. Within Nicaragua's protected-area hierarchy, Cerro Pancasan Natural Reserve is grouped with other cerro-based natural reserves rather than with the country's large biosphere reserves, volcanic national parks, or coastal wildlife refuges. This places it among the working-forest reserves that quietly underpin much of the country's biodiversity protection and regional watershed health.
