Chickasaw National Recreation Area

Chickasaw National Recreation Area is a protected landscape in the foothills of the Arbuckle Mountains in south-central Oklahoma, centered near the town of Sulphur in Murray County. The recreation area combines the former Platt National Park with the Arbuckle Recreation Area and surrounding lands, preserving a mix of forested hills, spring-fed creeks, prairies, and a sizable reservoir. The area is notable for its concentration of freshwater and mineral springs, which the Chickasaw people long recognized for their supposed healing qualities. Today these springs feed Travertine Creek and connect to the larger Lake of the Arbuckles, supporting swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing within easy reach of the broader Oklahoma plains. Named to honor the Chickasaw Nation, whose members relocated to the region from the southeastern United States and later sold the original land to the federal government, the recreation area remains an accessible natural retreat at the edge of the prairie, with no admission fee collected as part of the tribe's arrangement with the U.S. government.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
