Cozia National Park

Cozia National Park is a protected mountain area in south-central Romania, spanning 17,100 hectares across the northeastern part of Vâlcea County. The park occupies a strategic position in the Southern Carpathians, encompassing portions of the Lotru Mountains, the Căpățânii Mountains, and the entire Cozia Massif. Established initially as a proposal in 1966 and officially declared as a national park through legislation in 2000, the area represents one of Romania's significant ecological preserves. The landscape is characterized by dramatic karst terrain featuring sharp peaks, tower karst formations, limestone ridges, caves, and deep gorges, particularly along the middle course of the Olt River which traverses the park. This mountainous region supports exceptional biodiversity with multiple habitat types ranging from alluvial forests and Dacian beech forests to alpine meadows and boreal shrublands, making it a critical area for conservation within the Carpathian mountain chain.
