Dingley Dell Conservation Park

Dingley Dell Conservation Park is a small protected area in the south-east of South Australia, situated within the gazetted locality of Port MacDonnell and lying roughly four kilometres north-west of the Port MacDonnell town centre. Although the park covers only a few hectares, it holds significant cultural value because it contains the restored cottage where the colonial-era poet and horseman Adam Lindsay Gordon lived from 1864 to 1866. The property is an open woodland dominated by South Australian blue gum, with isolated stands of blackwood, golden wattle, coastal bearded-heath, and native box reinforcing a low-key, sheltered rural character. The park was purchased by the Government of South Australia in 1922 at the request of the Dingley Dell Restoration Committee and has operated continuously as a place of public remembrance and modest recreation ever since. Beyond its literary heritage, the reserve sits within the broader Limestone Coast landscape of south-eastern South Australia, an area more commonly celebrated for its volcanic features, coastal scenery, and surrounding farming districts. Its enduring significance comes less from dramatic natural features than from its compact combination of cultural history, native vegetation, and quiet rural setting.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
