Estero Padre Ramos Natural Reserve

Estero Padre Ramos Natural Reserve is a protected coastal area on the northwest Pacific coast of Nicaragua, within the municipality of El Viejo in the Chinandega department. The reserve protects a large mangrove-dominated estuary system together with associated lagoons, mudflats, sandy beaches, and rocky reefs, making it one of the most significant coastal wetlands in the country. The reserve is ecologically important both for its estuarine biodiversity and for being one of two known primary nesting grounds for the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle in the entire eastern Pacific Ocean. Each nesting season, a substantial proportion of all known hawksbill nesting activity in the region occurs on the reserve's beaches, giving the area a conservation importance that extends well beyond Nicaragua's borders. Around the estuary, several small beach communities, including the town of Padre Ramos, coexist with the protected landscape. Local livelihoods involve fishing, livestock rearing, shrimp farming, and agriculture, while carefully managed nature-based tourism has grown steadily, offering visitors encounters with mangroves, migratory birds, and turtle nesting beaches.
