Îles de la Paix Migratory Bird Sanctuary

The Îles de la Paix Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a federal bird sanctuary in southwestern Quebec, Canada, situated in the St. Lawrence River just upstream of Lac Saint-Louis and south of the Island of Montreal. The protected area covers most of the small Îles de la Paix island group together with surrounding waters, and lies within the greater Montreal metropolitan region near the town of Beauharnois. The sanctuary is defined by low-lying islands and adjacent shallow waters that are periodically inundated by high water. Its habitats of partly flooded forests, marshlands, and open water create a productive environment for waterbirds throughout much of the year. The site functions simultaneously as a Migratory Bird Sanctuary, a National Wildlife Area, and part of an Important Bird Area recognized by BirdLife International. The area is best understood as a strategic stopover site within the St. Lawrence flyway, supporting tens of thousands of migrating and breeding waterbirds each year. Its position so close to a major urban region gives the sanctuary a distinctive profile as a refuge of relatively natural island and wetland habitat embedded within an intensively developed landscape.
