Why Karkonoski National Park stands out
The park is best known for its high-mountain landscape along the Polish-Czech border, including the towering summit of Śnieżka, deeply carved glacial cirques like Śnieżne Kotły, extensive granite and basalt blockfields, raised peat bogs, and the rare subalpine krummholz of dwarf mountain pine. It is also recognized for harboring endemic Sudeten plant species and for being part of one of Central Europe's most important transboundary biosphere reserves.

Conservation interest in the Karkonosze long predates the establishment of the national park. As early as 1910 the area had a state commissioner for nature protection, and by 1927 a dedicated mountain warden service was created. In 1933 several nature reserves were established around the most notable glacial cirques and individual rock monuments, laying the institutional groundwork for later large-scale protection.
The national park itself was created on 16 January 1959 by regulation of the Council of Ministers, initially covering about 5,510 hectares. A ministerial order of 2 March 1959 set the detailed boundaries and established the first management rules. In 1996 the park was enlarged to roughly 5,578 hectares, and on 1 January 2016 a further addition of about 371 hectares brought the present-day area to approximately 5,951 hectares.
A major milestone came in 1992, when the Polish park was linked with the Czech Krkonoše National Park to form the transboundary UNESCO Krkonoše/Karkonosze Biosphere Reserve under the Man and the Biosphere programme. On 10 September 2010, at a conference in Szklarska Poręba, the area of the park together with its buffer zone received the status of a national geopark, recognizing its geological heritage alongside its ecological values.

Peatlands are another defining feature, including raised bogs that occupy flatter sections of the upper plateaus. Water is abundant in the form of mountain streams tumbling over granite steps, producing waterfalls such as the well-known Szklarka Cascade on the park's flank.
The overall relief forms a clear vertical sequence. Lower and middle elevations are cloaked in dense forest; higher slopes feature the dwarf mountain pine krummholz, often called kosodrzewina; and the highest ridges open into alpine-type grasslands, rock communities, and exposed bedrock. The park's highest point reaches the summit of Śnieżka, the apex of the Polish Krkonoše, on the very edge of the national border.

Ecologically, Karkonoski National Park is defined by its altitudinal zonation. The lower and upper forest belts, the traditional regla, are dominated by spruce and beech, with smaller shares of larch, sycamore maple, small-leaved lime, rowan, and fir. Above these forests lies the krummholz layer of dwarf mountain pine, and beyond it an alpine-tundra-like zone of grasses, herbs, and rock-dwelling vegetation. These transitions are compressed within a small area, giving the park an unusually concentrated ecological gradient.
Non-forest ecosystems are particularly important. High peatlands, shrublands of dwarf pine, blockfield vegetation, glacial cirques that in places hold small tarns, and open communities of tall-grass and tall-herb vegetation all fall within the protected area. The park also protects relict populations of cold-adapted species that survived the last glaciation on these uplands and are now isolated from other similar habitats further north.
The conservation system within the park combines strict, active, and landscape-level protection zones. Strict reserves cover the most sensitive upper landscapes, including main cirques and key peatland complexes, while active protection zones allow more managed use in support of habitat conservation. This zoning is essential for protecting the fragile soils and alpine-type communities, which are slow to recover from disturbance.

Wildlife in the park reflects the diversity of its mountain habitats. Mammals include around forty recorded species, ranging from widespread forest dwellers such as red deer, roe deer, red fox, and the European beaver to specialized cave-dwelling bats, with sixteen bat species known from the area. A curious addition to the fauna is the mouflon, introduced from Corsica to the Karkonosze in the early twentieth century and still present in the range.
Large predators illustrate the broader ecological story of the park. Wolves, lynx, and brown bears were historically eradicated from the area by local communities. According to 1997 assessments, the wolf had been absent as a breeding species for roughly two centuries and the lynx and bear for even longer. Favorable conditions linked to forest restructuring allowed lynx to return beginning in 2006, though by March 2018 they were no longer confirmed in the area. Wolves reappeared from 2014, first as lone individuals then in pairs, and again began breeding in the Karkonosze from the early part of the current decade.
Birdlife includes about ninety species, mixing forest, subalpine, and high-mountain specialists. Notable species include the Tengmalm's owl, the Eurasian pygmy owl, the black grouse, the western capercaillie, the ring ouzel, and the alpine accentor, the last reflecting the alpine character of the upper ridge.

Karkonoski National Park is one of the most important upland conservation areas in Central Europe. Together they form the Krkonoše/Karkonosze Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO, with over sixty thousand hectares of coordinated protection. This transboundary arrangement supports joint monitoring, species recovery, and visitor management, and represents one of the few functioning cross-border biosphere reserves in the Sudetes and Central Europe.
National protection is reinforced through a tiered system that includes strict reserves covering the most fragile cirques and peatlands, active management areas, and landscape protection zones in the surrounding buffer. The 2010 designation of the area, including the buffer zone, as a national geopark added formal recognition of its geological value, particularly its glacial landforms and granitic and basaltic rock heritage.

The Karkonosze have long held a strong cultural place in the imagination of the Sudetes. For centuries the range supported mountain farming, glassmaking, mining, and forestry, and the park's surroundings are dotted with traditional mountain villages and old spa and resort towns such as Szklarska Poręba and Karpacz. Names like Szklarka and the industrial heritage of glass and crystal production remain embedded in the local toponymy.
The symbolic heart of the mountain culture is Śnieżka, with its summit chapel and long tradition of pilgrimage and tourism reaching back into the nineteenth century. Snow cover typically closes higher trails but opens the way for ski touring, snow-shoeing, and use of designated cross-country nartostrada routes, while chairlifts serve ski areas. Wildlife viewing differs by season too: late spring and early summer are best for birds and alpine flowers on the higher ridges, while autumn brings quieter conditions and a strong display of colors in the lower forests. Visitors should expect very cold conditions and possible winter access restrictions in the strict protection zones at any time of year.
