Kiskunság National Park
Kiskunság National Park is Hungary's second national park, established on January 1, 1975, and located in the Danube–Tisza Interfluve region of the Great Hungarian Plain. The park covers approximately 530 square kilometers across Bács-Kiskun county and encompasses seven disjoint territorial units scattered throughout the Little Cumania (Kiskunság) region. This distinctive protected area preserves the unique puszta landscape—a vast, open grassland ecosystem shaped by centuries of pastoral human-nature interaction. In 1979, two-thirds of the park was designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve, recognizing its exceptional ecological value. The park features a remarkable diversity of habitats including alkaline lakes, moving sand dunes, marshes, floodplain forests, and dead river channels, making it one of Hungary's most ecologically significant protected areas and an important stopover for tens of thousands of migratory birds.
