Lake Malawi National Park

Lake Malawi National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located at the southern end of Lake Malawi in southeastern Africa. Established in 1980, it is the only national park in Malawi created specifically to protect fish and aquatic habitats, making it unique among the country's protected areas. The park encompasses approximately 94 square kilometers of land and water, including the mountainous Nankumbu Peninsula, foreshore areas, and thirteen islands scattered across the lake's southern basin. The park sits within the Great Rift Valley, with Lake Malawi lying 500 meters above sea level and reaching depths of 700 meters in places, making it one of the deepest lakes in the world. The park's global significance stems from its extraordinary biodiversity, particularly the cichlid fish fauna, which represents one of the most remarkable examples of evolutionary radiation in freshwater ecosystems.
