Loch Sunart to the Sound of Jura Marine Protected Area

Loch Sunart to the Sound of Jura Marine Protected Area is a Scottish marine protected area designated in 2014 on the country's western seaboard. It stretches across a chain of sea lochs, sounds, and firths in the Lochaber region, taking in the waters of Loch Sunart, the Sound of Mull, the Firth of Lorne, and the Sound of Jura. Together these waters form a connected seascape along the rugged western edge of the Scottish Highlands and the Inner Hebrides. The MPA was established primarily to protect a population of common skate, one of the largest and most threatened skate species in the north-east Atlantic, and to conserve distinctive Quaternary geological features preserved in the seabed. The area is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as a Category IV protected area, recognising its role in managing habitats and species rather than as a strict nature reserve. Because of the ecological and geological values it covers, the area faces restrictions on the most damaging seabed fishing practices, including forms of dredging, trawling, and longline fishing. Marine Scotland is responsible for the management of the site, working within the wider Scottish system of marine protection.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
