Mission Mountains Wilderness

The Mission Mountains Wilderness is a federally protected wilderness area in northwestern Montana, situated within the Swan Lake Ranger District of the Flathead National Forest. It encompasses a dramatic section of the Mission Range, a steep and often wall-like mountain chain that rises sharply from the surrounding valleys and the Flathead Valley to the west. The area protects a near-continuous sweep of ecosystems, from montane forests in the lower elevations to alpine tundra and glaciated cirques near the summits. It preserves habitat for grizzly bears, elk, mountain goats, and other wildlife characteristic of the northern Rockies, and it functions as a core wildland block adjacent to the tribal wilderness managed by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Established in 1975 under the framework of the 1964 Wilderness Act, the Mission Mountains Wilderness remains one of Montana's most intact and least-developed high-country preserves, offering non-motorized, trail-based access into a strikingly remote landscape.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
