Mount Rose Wilderness

The Mt. Rose Wilderness is a federally protected wilderness area in the Carson Range of northwestern Nevada, situated between Lake Tahoe and the city of Reno in Washoe County. Administered by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the wilderness spans roughly 31,223 acres and ranges in elevation from about 5,800 feet near western Reno to 10,776 feet at the summit of Mount Rose. The area was formally protected in 1989, recognizing both its ecological significance and its long cultural importance to the Washoe people. The wilderness sits at a striking ecological crossroads, where the forested, north-facing slopes of the Sierra Nevada's Carson Range meet the dry, sage-dominated environments of the Great Basin. Because of this transitional position, the landscape supports a mix of plant communities drawn from both regions, including montane conifers, chaparral, and high-elevation meadows that gradually give way to more arid vegetation patterns as one moves east. The area is notable not only for its physical setting but also for its deep human history. The Washoe Tribe has inhabited the region for more than 400 generations, and the landscape continues to be culturally significant even as it draws outdoor enthusiasts for hiking, skiing, and accessible alpine scenery near a major metropolitan area.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
