Schatthangwald Röhre Nature Reserve

Schatthangwald Röhre is a small nature reserve in the Hochsauerlandkreis district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, situated west of Sundern-Röhre on the edge of the Röhr river valley. Covering roughly 5.6 hectares, the area protects a steep, shaded hillside forest together with a disused limestone quarry and the entrance to the Große Sunderner Höhle, a cave system of notable geological and biological interest. The reserve's ecological value lies in the unusual combination of features it brings together in a compact space: calcareous beech forest, shaded slope woodland with hornbeam coppice, a former quarry floor with calcium-loving plant species, and a subterranean cave system that supports specialized invertebrate life. Since 2005 the area has also formed part of the EU-wide Fauna-Flora-Habitat network through the designation of the surrounding Große Sunderner Höhle FFH site. Although small in size, Schatthangwald Röhre illustrates the kind of locally significant protected landscape that characterizes the Sauerland: a forested limestone ridge shaped by past quarrying, fringed by a steep river valley, and harboring rare plant communities and cave fauna typical of calcareous substrates in an otherwise largely siliceous region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
