Ancient Ediacaran fossils in the Flinders Ranges

Nilpena Ediacara National Park

Nilpena Ediacara National Park is a protected area in the northern Flinders Ranges of South Australia, approximately 551 kilometres north of Adelaide. The park is renowned for its extraordinary concentration of Ediacaran fossils, which represent some of the oldest known evidence of complex multicellular animal life on Earth. These fossils, discovered in the Ediacara Hills, date to approximately 550 million years ago and provide a critical window into the evolutionary transition between simple unicellular organisms and the more complex animals that emerged during the Cambrian explosion. The park covers over 60,000 hectares and was formally established as a national park in June 2021, opening to the public in April 2023. It lies on the traditional lands of the Adnyamathanha people and is currently under consideration for UNESCO World Heritage status as part of a broader nomination for the Flinders Ranges.
