Norfolk Marine Park

The Norfolk Marine Park is one of Australia's offshore marine reserves, situated in the ocean surrounding Norfolk Island, a small external territory in the southwestern Pacific. Covering a vast area of roughly 188,000 square kilometres, it stretches several hundred kilometres in a north to south direction through a dynamic region where warm Coral Sea waters meet the cooler, nutrient-rich Tasman Sea. The marine park is recognised for its high productivity and the presence of important migratory species, including humpback whales and seabirds that travel through these waters. It also protects ecosystems of the Norfolk Island Province bioregion and a striking variety of seafloor features such as seamounts, ridges, canyons, plateaus, and deep troughs. Management of the park is shared within the broader Temperate East Marine Parks Network, and its zonation balances strict no-take protection with sustainable habitat protection zones, helping to maintain ecological processes across one of the most biogeographically important marine regions between Australia, New Caledonia, and New Zealand.
