Refugio de Vida Silvestre Pasochoa

Refugio de Vida Silvestre Pasochoa is a small protected natural area in the northern Andes of Ecuador, located on the slopes of the collapsed Pasochoa volcano in the province of Pichincha. It sits roughly 45 kilometers southeast of Quito, within the parish of Uyumbicho in Mejía canton, and borders the populated and agricultural valleys that surround the Ecuadorian capital. The refuge protects one of the last remaining remnants of inter-Andean humid forest in central-northern Ecuador, set above a landscape that combines dense montane cloud forest, high-elevation grassland, and the steep inner walls of an ancient volcanic crater. It is administered under Ecuador's national protected areas system as a Wildlife Refuge and is recognized internationally as an Important Bird Area, supporting a rich community of Andean hummingbirds and other highland species. Despite its modest size and the strong external pressures from surrounding farms and settlements, Pasochoa remains a key reference site for scientific understanding of the original vegetation of the Ecuadorian Andes and an accessible destination for nature tourism, environmental education, and birdwatching close to the capital.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
