Point Pelee National Park

Point Pelee National Park is a unique natural preserve situated at the southernmost tip of mainland Canada in southwestern Ontario. The park occupies a distinctive sandspit that extends approximately seven kilometres into Lake Erie, creating a narrow peninsula of marsh and woodland habitats that tapers to a sharp triangular point. Established on May 29, 1918, it holds the distinction of being the first national park in Canada created specifically for conservation purposes. The park encompasses about 1,564 hectares, making it the smallest national park in Canada, yet it supports remarkable biodiversity due to its position at the crossroads of major bird migration flyways and its location within the Carolinian forest zone. The name pelée derives from the French word for bald, describing the rocky, treeless eastern shoreline that early French explorers encountered. The park was designated as a Ramsar Wetland in 1987 and became Canada's first national park dark-sky preserve in 2006, reflecting its ongoing commitment to both ecological and astronomical conservation.
