Red Buttes Wilderness

Red Buttes Wilderness is a federally protected wilderness area straddling the border between southwestern Oregon and northwestern California. Set within the Klamath and Rogue River–Siskiyou national forests, it occupies a roughly rectangular block along the crest of the Siskiyou Mountains, with most of its acreage in California and a smaller portion in Oregon. The wilderness is named for the prominent Red Buttes peak, whose iron- and magnesium-rich rock gives the range its distinctive reddish-orange color. Its terrain spans deep forested canyons, high ridges, subalpine meadows, and small glacial basins, with elevations rising from the bottom of Butte Fork Canyon to summits above 6,700 feet. The area protects old-growth forests, rare serpentine plant communities, and habitat for a broad range of mountain wildlife. Designated in 1984 under twin California and Oregon wilderness acts, Red Buttes is managed for its backcountry character under the principles of the Wilderness Act of 1964. It is appreciated for its solitude, scenic high-country trails, botanically rich slopes, and its position at the heart of one of the oldest and most geologically complex mountain ranges in the Pacific Northwest.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
