Red Mountain Wilderness

Red Mountain Wilderness is a compact protected wilderness area in the White Pine Range of eastern Nevada, straddling the border between White Pine and Nye counties. Designated by the United States Congress in late 2006, it covers roughly twenty thousand acres of rugged, high-desert terrain and is administered by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The defining character of the area comes from its geology: long ridges and rounded peaks composed of iron-rich volcanic rock that weathers into distinctive red and orange hues. These slopes rise above the broader Great Basin landscape and support open stands of piñon, limber pine, and especially bristlecone pine, one of the longest-lived tree species on Earth. Although modest in size and remote in setting, the wilderness is significant for the unusually vivid coloration of its terrain, the presence of ancient pine groves, and its position adjacent to the larger Currant Mountain Wilderness, together forming a continuous block of protected high-country in the central Great Basin.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
