Reserva de la biosfera de las Tierras del Miño

The Reserva de la biosfera de las Tierras del Miño is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve located in the province of Lugo, in the autonomous community of Galicia in northwestern Spain. It covers the upper basin of the Miño (Minho) river and spans a large portion of the Galician interior, representing one of the most extensive protected cultural and ecological landscapes in the region. The reserve is centered on the harmonization of biological and cultural diversity with the social and economic life of the communities that inhabit the area. Its large size makes it the second largest biosphere reserve on peninsular Spain (after the Dehesas de Sierra Morena) and the largest within Galicia, encompassing 26 municipalities organized across seven comarcas. Ecologically, the reserve is notable for the exceptional quality of its riverine and wetland environments. The forests along the Miño and its associated watercourses are among the most valuable fluvial ecosystems of mainland Spain, supporting ancient trees, aquatic plants, protected species, and a mosaic of habitats that coexist with traditional human activities.
