Regional Natural Reserve of the Upper Vézère Valley

The Regional Natural Reserve of the Upper Vézère Valley is a small protected area in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of central France, located in the department of Corrèze. Classified in 2015, it covers roughly 197 hectares distributed across four separate, non-contiguous parcels on the communes of Saint-Merd-les-Oussines and Tarnac, within the upper reaches of the Vézère river basin on the Plateau de Millevaches. The reserve is administered by the Conservatoire d'espaces naturels du Limousin and is classed as an IUCN Category IV protected area, recognizing its role in safeguarding specific habitats rather than entire ecosystems. Its character is shaped by peatland landscapes, including the tourbière-étang de Chabannes near Saint-Merd-les-Oussines, and by the broader mosaic of wetland, bog, and upland habitats typical of this part of the Massif Central. Although modest in size, the reserve contributes to a wider network of conservation efforts in the former Limousin region, where peat bogs, wet meadows, and oligotrophic waters are of particular ecological importance. It offers a foothold for the protection of habitat types that have been reduced across much of lowland France.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
