Jezioro Zdedy Nature Reserve

The Jezioro Zdedy Nature Reserve is a faunal nature reserve located in the gmina Orzysz, within Pisz County in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship of northeastern Poland. It lies on the Równina Mazurska, or Masurian Plain, a broad post-glacial lowland shaped by the ice age movements that left much of this part of Poland with shallow lakes, peatlands, and extensive wetland systems. Although the reserve takes its name from Lake Zdedy, its protected territory does not actually include the lake itself. Instead, it surrounds the western shoreline of the lake, protecting an area of reeds, meadows, forests, and boggy ground that together form some of the most important crane staging habitat in the region. The reserve was formally established in 2003 and is managed under active conservation, a status indicating that ongoing human intervention is used to maintain its ecological character. The reserve is best understood as a wetland sanctuary set within a much larger military training landscape. Its northern section falls inside the active Orzysz military training ground, yet despite this unusual setting the area supports a remarkable diversity of birds, plants, and large mammals, anchoring it as a meaningful site for both biodiversity conservation and crane protection in the Masurian lake district.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
