Risnjak National Park

Risnjak National Park is a protected area in Gorski Kotar, the most mountainous and heavily forested region of Croatia, located approximately 15 kilometers inland from the Adriatic Sea. The park encompasses 63.5 square kilometers around the Risnjak and Snježnik massifs and includes the source of the Kupa River, one of Croatia's significant waterways. Established in 1949 following botanist Ivo Horvat's recommendation, the park was expanded in 1997 to its current boundaries, incorporating additional terrain and inhabited village areas. The park's strategic location on the northern Dinaric Alps creates a natural divide between the Adriatic and Black Sea watersheds, making it a critical ecological corridor and climatic barrier between Croatia's coastal and continental regions.
