Roudný Natural Monument

Roudný is a small protected natural monument in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, located near the village of Zvěstov in the Benešov District. The site protects a man-made habitat: the spoil heap of a former gold mine, whose sandy, disturbed substrate has become unexpectedly valuable for rare flora, fungi, and invertebrates. Although the protected area covers only about 2.5 hectares and sits between roughly 436 and 450 meters in elevation, it carries disproportionate ecological significance for the region. The monument is most notable for supporting Cicindela arenaria ssp. viennensis, a rare tiger beetle subspecies that, according to current findings, occurs only at this single locality within Bohemia. The sandy slopes and edges of the heap also host threatened orchid species, marsh-adapted plants, endangered leaf beetles, and a remarkable assemblage of fungi, including a species recorded for the first time in the Czech Republic. Beyond its biological value, Roudný illustrates how abandoned industrial sites can evolve into refuges for species that depend on open, nutrient-poor sand habitats. The site also sits within an area where proposals to resume gold exploration and extraction have repeatedly threatened the integrity of the protected locality.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
