Schwarzwald Nature Reserve

Schwarzwald is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in southwestern Germany, situated in the Upper Rhine Plain near the towns of Lingenfeld and Mechtersheim. Despite its name, it has no connection to the famous Black Forest region; it is a protected floodplain landscape that lies between the modern course of the River Rhine and the older Lingenfelder Altrhein, an oxbow arm of the Rhine. The reserve safeguards a characteristic mosaic of Rhine floodplain habitats, including softwood and hardwood alluvial forests, old-growth and pollarded willows, extensively used meadows, oxbow waters, gravel pit lakes, sand and gravel bars, reedbeds, and tall herb communities. Established in 1997, the area covers roughly 341 hectares and represents one of the many protected floodplain remnants along the densely settled Upper Rhine, where natural river dynamics have been heavily altered by engineering and land reclamation.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
