A remote mountain-fjord wilderness in Norway's Arctic circle

Sjunkhatten National Park

Sjunkhatten National Park is a vast protected wilderness area in northern Norway, established in 2010 to preserve one of North Norway's largest nearly untouched mountain-fjord complexes. The park encompasses a 417.5-square-kilometre peninsula between the Sørfolda and Saltfjorden fjords in Nordland county, spanning Bodø, Fauske, and Sørfold municipalities. The landscape features dramatically glacier-scoured mountains with both jagged peaks and rounded summits, deeply incised fjords, extensive karst and cave systems, and the large freshwater lake Heggmovatnet. This Arctic wilderness supports remarkable biodiversity despite its high-latitude setting, with habitats ranging from boreal birch forest to alpine tundra, and holds evidence of human presence dating back to the Mesolithic period around 8,000 years ago.
