A young, ever-shifting Wadden Sea peninsula shaped by sand and storm

Skallingen

Skallingen is a protected peninsula in the northern part of the Danish Wadden Sea, lying north of Esbjerg between Blåvand and the island of Fanø. Stretching roughly seven kilometers and covering about two thousand hectares, it is a rare example of relatively young, naturally formed coastal land, built up over centuries by the sea depositing sand after a catastrophic storm surge in 1634. The peninsula continues to evolve, with tidal channels cutting through its salt marshes and shifting dunes reshaping its surface. Today Skallingen is uninhabited and protected, owned and managed by the Danish Nature Agency (Naturstyrelsen). Its tidal flats, salt marshes, dunes, and beaches form an important component of the wider Wadden Sea ecosystem, one of Europe's most significant intertidal landscapes. Beyond its natural character, Skallingen carries a more recent and darker history as the site of Denmark's last remaining minefield, laid during the German occupation in the Second World War and only finally cleared in 2012. The area offers a quiet, open landscape where tidal processes, sand drift, and plant succession continue to shape the land, while the long-running mine clearance story gives the place a notable place in modern Danish environmental and military history.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
