Vasière des Badamiers

The Vasière des Badamiers is a protected coastal wetland on the western side of Petite-Terre, the smaller inhabited island of the French overseas department of Mayotte. The site is a shallow, tide-influenced mudflat partially enclosed by an old, silted reef ridge that separates it from the open lagoon, with mangrove trees colonizing parts of the shore. It is one of the most important sites for waterbirds in the Comoros archipelago and was designated as a Ramsar wetland of international importance in 2011. Despite its compact size, the mudflat functions as a critical stopover and feeding ground for migratory shorebirds, seabirds, and locally breeding species, including the endangered Humblot's heron. The site also supports turtles, fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and unique intertidal invertebrates, and it plays a natural water-filtering role between the inland watershed and the broader lagoon. It is managed by the Conservatoire du littoral and forms part of the larger Mayotte Marine Natural Park.
